Exploring Life Through The Lens

Passion Fruit Juice With A Twist

I’ve never cut open a passion fruit before until… well, a few days back. It’s just one of those fruit where it doesn’t make much sense to eat it. It has a hard skin. It’s not all flesh-y inside. There’s so much seed with every bite it seems. Like eating a whole fish, bones and all. Not a friendly fruit.

Few days back, everything changed. I cut my first passion fruit. It felt like my hands knew exactly what to do. Fine, it was a no brainer. Just slice it in half. Still, history was in the making.

The fruit revealed itself. I took a good look at it and… I still wasn’t gonna eat it. No way are the seeds coming anywhere near my mouth. How about just sucking the entire thing and spitting the residue out? Ewwww… Maybe one day, but not today.

At that instant, a sudden flash back (in slow-mo) of me slurping an absolutely delicious drink made from orange and yakult (a probiotic drink) ten years ago came to mind.

Passion Fruit Juice with Yakult. Just the name makes me salivate.

Now my passion fruit’s got a purpose. I started to cut more and scooped out the flesh into a bowl. I cut more and more. The bowl didn’t look like it was filling up fast. One fruit but half of it’s practically empty. Such a rip off. I think I ended up cutting 100 passion fruit. Ok, maybe just 12 but who’s counting.

I fixed the drink and tasted it. Oh my holy God. It was Mind Blowingly good! Sweet, a lil sour, and a lil milky from the yakult. Mr. V was a happy man. Throw in a small banana to enjoy a creamier version instead.

Quick Recipe      Serves 2-4

what you need:

6 passion fruit, cut in half and scoop flesh out (mine yielded 3/4 cups of passion fruit)
1 1/2 cups distilled water (2:1 water to passion fruit, more or less depending on your preference)
2 bottles of yakult (65ml each)
Sweetener (sugar or honey)
Banana (optional – if you like a ‘smoothie’ version. Adjust sweetness if so)

directions:

  1. Place passion fruit and water into a blender and blend on low to medium low until flesh has separated from the seeds. (Don’t blend too long or on too high a speed or the seeds may break and become gritty).
  2. Strain the juice and discard the pulp. Make sure there are no more seeds in the blender.
  3. Pour juice back into blender along with yakult and sweetener. Blend until well combined. (Or you can directly mix it in a glass).

What mind blowing juice do you love?
