Exploring Life Through The Lens

Cajun Spice Blend

Healthy and nutritious food doesn’t have to taste bland or even acceptable. Who said that food that tastes good must be unhealthy? Not entirely true. I say entirely because I do admit that some food that tastes really good can be unhealthy. Oh pork lard, how I love thee…. but that’s beside the point. The point is, food can absolutely be delicious and healthy if they’ve been spiced and herbed properly (Yeap, I made them verbs).

So let’s say you have a choice between a lil salted pan fried chicken or spicy Cajun marinated pan fried chicken, which would you choose? A no-brainer. Spices and herbs add flavor to food without the extra sodium, sugar, calories and fat. Ordinary dishes become extraordinary. Boring becomes exciting. Colorless becomes colorful. War can turn to peace. “Why is the food so bland?” wars become “Honey, the food is fantastic, you can go buy new shoes” peace. Furthermore, spices and herbs are good for health. Thumbs up!

Let’s go back to our Cajun Marinated Pan Fried Chicken. Just the name of it already causes secretion of saliva. Swallow it back! I love Cajun spice. It can season anything. Cajun rice. Cajun fries. Cajun popcorn. Cajun shrimp. Cajun seafood. Cajun pork. Cajun fish. Cajun panda. Ok, I’m getting a lil carried away. But truly, it is such a versatile spice blend.

Cajun Spice Blend

This spice blend has the perfect mix of flavor from each spice and with a tinge of spicy because I like spicy. It’s really fabulous. Make this and you don’t have to count on store bought ones that are filled with preservatives and chemicals anymore. It is so simple to make and most of you probably have the spices in your spice rack already. Best thing about a homemade blend is that you can control the saltiness and the spiciness. The power is in you.

Quick Recipe

what you need:

2 tsp
Cumin
Coriander
Paprika
Garlic Powder
Onion Powder
Chili Powder

1 tsp
Thyme
Oregano
Black Pepper
Salt

directions:

Combine and mix all the spices. Decrease or increase chili pepper for heat. Replace chili with Cayenne pepper to increase the level of the spiciness. Add a pinch of sugar if you want to. Use spice to season anything you desire. If needed, increase the quantity accordingly and store in an airtight container at a dry, cool place for up to 3 months.

What other great spice blend do you know?
