Exploring Life Through The Lens

Best way to remove black mold from tile and grout

I wanted to take a relaxing shower. I saw black mold & grime on the tiles and grout. I’ll get to it tomorrow. Scrubbing isn’t relaxing. This can’t be part of taking my shower equation. One week later, I find myself saying the same thing. I tried to ignore it. The spots will go away if I ignore it. Tomorrow. I will clean it tomorrow. One month later, Mr. V is yelling from the bathroom. “There’s mold on the floor.” Three weeks before the yelling, I started taking my relaxing showers in another bathroom. Problem was solved… till now. I looked up some dehumidifier reviews, to see if it would help dry out the room. I decided to purchase one to prevent future mold. I inspected the spots. Multiplied in size, I see it has. (I speak Yoda when I think sometimes). I remembered the huge bag of baking soda we just got from Costco. Safe and natural. I closed my eyes and thought hard about baking soda. Baking soda. Baking soda. I opened my eyes and the floor went from picture left to right.

If only.

But really, I wasn’t gonna spend much effort on this.

I sprinkled baking soda on the hot spots, sprayed my ‘Amway LOC and water’  (see Note below)  solution and watched it bubbled. I let it sit for 1 hour. You probably don’t have to wait that long. I did because I forgot. I’d say 15 minutes would do. But since I left it for 1 hour, I’ll stick with that.

Now, you would hope I’d say rinse away and be done it it. Well. No. It still takes some whish whash scrubbing. But not like back breaking, head sweating, arms aching kinda scrubbing. So whish whash literally means two scrubs. Ok maybe three. The baking soda and suds do most of the work. That means less energy for a happier me.

Many methods out there suggests to use a toothbrush. Really? That’ll take light years. Why would anyone suggest that? I only use it for the hard to reach corners and to brush my teeth of course. Separate tooth brush that is. Anyway, using a bigger brush with a longer handle shortens the time and energy even more.

You may ask, why sprinkle baking soda and not just mix it in the water and LOC solution in a spray bottle and spray directly? Look, the mold is one month old. I’d like to get more cleaning power and let the paste be its abrasive self. Besides, looking at baking soda bubbling is fun. Why take fun out of cleaning?

How do you remove black mold from tile and grout?

Quick Method

what you need:

  1. Baking soda
  2. LOC and water solution in a spray bottle (see note)
  3. Brush

directions:

  1. Sprinkle baking soda
  2. Spray water to LOC solution on to baking soda
  3. Look at it bubble away (optional)
  4. Let sit for 1 hour
  5. Scrub and rinse

Note: For my Amway LOC with water solution, mix a 10: 1 LOC to water ratio. You can use dishwashing liquid or any multipurpose cleaner. The goal is to create suds.
